Yesterday we took a standards mastery test and as a whole did poorly on indentifying whether there was comparsions, contrasting, a cause and effect relationship, or a sequencing relationship between paragraphs in a passage. This was great information for me, so we could get in some extra practice on this important concept before our ISAT test. In order to do this we reviewed those four vocabulary terms to clarify what it is talking about. (Comparing means finding similarities and does not look at differences, and that can be confusing for kids.) Then we read short paragraphs and the students had to decide if the paragraph was showing a comparison, contrast, cause and effect, or sequencing relationship. The students "submitted" their answers by holding up a card that has something similar to a QR code. It has a letter on each side and the letter they held at the top was scanned into my phone and recorded their answer. Each card is numbered and assigned to a student so I am able to see who chose which answer. It is actually a pretty basic activity to set up and implement, but had 100% engagment. It makes a teacher's heart happy to hear the words: "I don't why, but this is a lot of fun!" We might have to find another reason to use the plickers program again soon!
